Good wine comes from Baden-Baden

There's a Bulgarian saying which says: "If you're in search of good wine, find out where the popes go."

Which, incidentally, leads us nicely on to our next insider tip about wine in the region. Did you know that Baden-Baden's traditional wine producer, the Nägelsförst wine estate, was founded by the Cistercian Abbey in Lichtental? Originally established as a dairy farm in 1268, pinot noir vines from the principal abbey in Citeaux, France, were planted for the first time on the estate by the Cistercian nuns in 1344 and in so doing laying the foundation for viticulture in the region. During the time of Napoleon I, at the start of the 19th century, the estate passed into the hands of the ruling margraves of Baden. In 1864, the estate was sold for the first time to a private individual. Since the middle of 1993, the Gut Nägelsförst estate has been owned by Baden-Baden-born Reinhard J. Strickler, who, after investing a great deal of time and money, has been able to extend the holding from 10 to 33 hectares.

In addition to Riesling and Pinot noir grapes other varieties such as Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Merlot are grown on the estate's three separate vineyards of Stich den Buben, Klosterbergfelsen and Mauerberg.

To allow you to form your own impression of the unique flavour of the Nägelförst wines, the estate organises wine tasting sessions that take place either in the cellar or in the manor house. As well as savouring the excellent wines, you can also enjoy the wonderful views of the vineyards and Rhine valley from the estate's vantage point.
